ROSS - Rapid Oil Spill Surveillance Tool
An app for fast response aerial surveillance
Available today the ROSS app – a Rapid Surveillance Tool for Oil Spill Response Monitoring which enables aerial observers to easily collect GPS referenced data, automate calculations and produce fast standardised reports.
SpillConsult Ltd and BP have worked collaboratively to bring you the ROSS Tool. That is not only useful in the initial stages of an incident, but valuable throughout the lifetime of a response, as the situational awareness priorities evolve – from oil on water estimations, to directing response operations, shoreline oiling surveys and enviro-socio-economic monitoring.
The app enables the user to make a multitude of geo-referenced observations, take photographs and record recommendations for the Incident Command Post (ICP). All of which are marked in situ on a moving map. ROSS is simple and intuitive to use, with a technical library to remind more experienced observers and to aid the less experienced.
Observational data can be collected in four streams:
• Oil on water observations (slick estimation)
• Shoreline oiling
• Operational Support
• General survey (enviro-socio-economic).
The delineation of these streams allows the data to be sorted and outputted according to different Incident Management Team (IMT) members’ situational needs.
Data (CSV, KML) can be uploaded into a Common Operating Picture or shared with other ROSS users. The ROSS tool’s outputs (metadata and pdf report format) have been developed for ease of use – enabling data to be quickly collated, disseminated and analysed for the current or next operational period, thus creating an auditable trail of documents and data.
ROSS is available to download today on the App Store for just £9.99. It is designed for use on an iPad, with an aviation GPS and optimised to iOS 10.0 or later.
