Oil Spill Exercise - BP Sunbury

SpillConsult recently conducted an Oil Spill exercise for the BP Mutual Response Team (MRT) in Sunbury, London.

The objectives of the exercise included, but were not limited to: the engagement of the BP MRT members in appropriate Incident Management roles and preparing them to drop seamlessly into an incident three days after it has begun.

The exercise scenario centred on a terrorist attack on a BP tanker, which resulted in the release of up to 10,000 m3 of crude oil into the coastal waters of Komoko — our synthetic environment complete with detailed sensitivity maps, dynamic weather, and simulated community and government impacts.

With more than 50 MRT members present and all teams inserted into day three of the event, the atmosphere in the command centre was busy, intense and fast-paced. Feedback from the event was overwhelmingly positive, with many participants reporting that they found the day highly instructive and immediately applicable to real-world response.

Overall, the exercise was very successful, and we wish the BP MRT every success in their ongoing preparedness and response work.
