Department for Transport Small Business Supplier & VCSE Event

Yesterday, our Bid & Marketing Lead, Ella Wiffen, and Consultant, Matthew Wilson, had the pleasure of attending the Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom's Small Business Supplier & VCSE Event.

It was a valuable opportunity to hear insights and updates from senior representatives across the sector, including Ann McChesney, Deputy Director at Crown Commercial Service; Paul Rogers, Commercial Director at the Department for Transport; Debbie Ealden, Procurement Manager at Balfour Beatty; and others.

The event provided some particularly encouraging insights into the evolving procurement landscape, including:

👉 The Procurement Act 2023 and its recognition of SMEs as an essential part of public procurement.

👉 Key barriers SMEs face when accessing public sector opportunities.

👉 Practical bidding tips and guidance on how SMEs can “break into” DfT procurement.

👉 The progress made against the DfT’s SME Action Plan, with SME spend reaching 34.2% - exceeding the 33% target.

It was also a fantastic opportunity to connect with senior representatives, fellow SMEs and other organisations across the sector.

A hugely informative and encouraging event – and one that reinforces the importance of creating meaningful opportunities for SMEs and VCSEs within public procurement.
