ICS Courses

ICS 400

ICS 400 is a two-day course that builds on knowledge from ICS 100, 200, and 300, focusing on applying ICS principles to large, complex incidents. It emphasises strategic management, leadership, and interagency coordination rather than tactical operations.

Designed for senior responders, incident commanders, command staff, and agency leaders, the course supports those responsible for managing or overseeing major incidents and emergency operations.

ICS 402

This one-day awareness-level course is designed for senior executives, policymakers, and departmental heads who provide strategic oversight during incidents.

It offers a high-level overview of the Incident Command System (ICS) and explains how senior leadership interfaces with the Incident Management Team (IMT) during response operations.

Other ICS Courses

Alongside the core courses listed above, a range of other standard ICS training programmes have been developed by various organisations over time. SpillConsult can also deliver specific ICS courses tailored to client requirements.

Bespoke Introduction to ICS

Some clients prefer a combined “Introduction to ICS” course that integrates ICS 100 and 200, tailored with additional content to suit their specific needs and operational context.

The course is adapted to reflect the client’s incident management system, IMT structure, and roles, and is delivered by our subject matter experts to ensure participants are fully prepared for their organisational responsibilities.

IMT Response IMT Training

We deliver courses for Incident Management Teams focused on the initial response phase, enhancing emergency response capability through the practical application of ICS principles from the outset.

Our training simplifies ICS and makes it directly relevant and valuable during this critical stage of an incident. Each course is fully tailored to the client’s specific risks, structure, and operational needs.

IMT Incident Commander Course

This specialist course focuses on the demanding role of the Incident Management Team (IMT) Incident Commander (IC), exploring the key skills, qualities, and attributes required for effective leadership in this role.

It is delivered as a two-day programme for new or less experienced ICs, and can be condensed into a one-day course for experienced practitioners.

Section and Role Specific Training

While there are stand alone courses for many of these, our experience shows that this training is most valuable when tailored for the client’s specific situation. There are always variations regarding; risks, roles, IMS/T structure etc. Most importantly, none of the different groups or roles work in isolation so they are far better off being trained in relevant groups.

This course prepares participants to operate effectively within a defined ICS function. It develops both practical leadership capability and a clear understanding of individual responsibilities within the wider structure of the Incident Command System.

Participants learn how their role contributes to Incident Action Plans, how to coordinate with other teams, and how their section fits into the overall response. The training builds confidence, strengthens operational effectiveness, and improves coordination across the Incident Command System.
